A peaceful Sunday service turned into a horrifying tragedy when multiple people were shot at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, authorities confirmed earlier today.
According to local law enforcement, the incident occurred around 10:45 a.m., when a gunman entered the church during the morning service and opened fire on attendees. Witnesses described chaos as churchgoers scrambled for safety while others attempted to help the wounded.
Emergency dispatchers immediately responded to a flurry of 911 calls reporting gunshots and injuries. Firefighters, police, and multiple ambulances quickly arrived on scene, securing the area and escorting survivors out of the building.
“It was absolute panic,” said Mary Whitaker, a church member who was in a nearby classroom at the time. “We heard loud pops — then screaming. People were crying and trying to hide wherever they could.”
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief Ron Wiles confirmed that several people were struck by gunfire, though the exact number of victims has not yet been released. Some were transported to McLaren Flint Hospital, where at least two are reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect but confirmed that one person is in custody. Police said the shooter was apprehended without further violence after being cornered in the church parking lot.
“The suspect acted alone,” Chief Wiles stated during a press briefing. “There is no ongoing threat to the public, and we are currently investigating the motive behind this senseless act.”
Early reports suggest that the incident may have been domestic in nature, though investigators have not ruled out other possibilities.
Michigan State Police have joined the investigation, along with agents from the FBI and ATF, who will examine the firearm used in the attack.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) expressing condolences to the victims and their families.
“My heart breaks for the Grand Blanc community,” Whitmer wrote. “Gun violence has no place in our places of worship. We must continue working toward a safer Michigan for everyone.”
As the investigation continues, the church remains closed and has been designated a crime scene. Police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage to reconstruct the timeline of the attack.
Members of the local community have already begun organizing candlelight vigils and prayer circles outside nearby churches, expressing solidarity with the victims.
“This is a small, tight-knit congregation,” said Reverend Paul Jensen, from a nearby parish. “What happened today is devastating for everyone. We’re praying for healing and peace.”
The Grand Blanc Police Department is urging anyone with additional footage or information to contact their tip line.
This tragic shooting marks yet another incident in the growing list of gun-related attacks on places of worship across the United States, reigniting debates about security in religious institutions and gun control legislation.
