A woman’s attempt to pull off a daring scam inside a Target store took a shocking turn — ending with her in handcuffs in the parking lot and a viral police video that’s left viewers stunned.
The incident, which occurred on June 20, 2023, in Florida, started as what appeared to be a routine case of retail fraud — but quickly escalated into one of the most talked-about shoplifting busts of the year. According to authorities, the woman, whose identity has not been released, allegedly tried to manipulate the store’s return system by faking receipts and attempting to walk out with hundreds of dollars worth of electronics.
Bodycam footage released by Body Cam Watch shows the aftermath of the arrest, as officers question the woman outside the store, near a white SUV. She appears visibly shaken, keeping her head down while officers sift through shopping bags filled with unpurchased merchandise.
“She thought she could outsmart the scanners,” said one officer in the video. “But she didn’t know how much Target’s loss prevention team watches for this stuff.”
Investigators say the woman’s plan involved scanning cheap household items while pretending to self-check expensive electronics, including tablets and headphones. Surveillance footage reportedly caught her covering barcodes with her hand, a common trick among retail scammers.
However, her luck ran out when the self-checkout camera system flagged her transaction for review. Store security intervened moments before she reached the exit, confronting her as she tried to leave with the unpaid goods. When police arrived, they discovered fake receipts in her bag, along with two prepaid debit cards allegedly used in previous scams at nearby locations.
The video captures the tense exchange between the woman and officers:
“I didn’t do anything wrong,” she insists.
“You just tried to walk out with $800 worth of stuff,” the officer replies. “That’s not a mistake — that’s theft.”
As officers search her vehicle, they find multiple Target bags, unused return slips, and what appeared to be a handwritten list of store locations — suggesting this wasn’t her first attempt.
Local reports confirm she now faces multiple charges, including grand theft, fraud, and possession of forged receipts.
The story sparked massive discussion online, with many shocked by how advanced retail security systems have become. On social media, users debated whether self-checkout scams are becoming more common — and how stores are cracking down.
“You can’t outsmart those cameras anymore,” one viewer commented.
“People really risk prison time for a few gadgets?” another wrote.
Retail crime experts say this kind of scheme has surged in recent years, especially with the rise of self-checkout lanes. According to a 2023 National Retail Federation report, stores lost over $112 billion in theft-related incidents — with fraudsters often targeting big-name retailers like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy.
In the end, the woman’s “easy payday” turned into a costly mistake. She was released on bond and is awaiting trial, but the internet has already dubbed her “The Target Trickster” — a cautionary example of how quickly greed can turn into humiliation.
As one officer summed it up perfectly in the video:
“She thought she was walking out rich. Instead, she’s walking out arrested.”
