Authorities have arrested a suspect following a violent armed robbery that left an entire neighborhood shaken. The man, identified by police as a 42-year-old resident of Troy, was taken into custody after allegedly using an assault-style rifle during a late-night holdup at a local convenience store.
According to the Troy Police Department, officers responded to an emergency call shortly after 11 p.m. reporting a robbery in progress at a gas station on Maple Avenue. Witnesses claimed the suspect entered the store wearing dark clothing and a mask, brandishing what appeared to be a high-powered rifle. Surveillance footage captured the terrifying moments as customers ducked for cover while the suspect demanded cash from the clerk.
“The suspect pointed the weapon directly at the cashier and shouted for him to open the register,” said Police Chief Darren Wilson during a press briefing. “Thankfully, no one was physically harmed, but the emotional impact on those involved is significant.”
Investigators say the suspect fled the scene with several hundred dollars in cash, leaving behind multiple witnesses who were able to provide a detailed description of both the vehicle and the weapon. Within hours, officers located the suspect’s car parked outside a nearby apartment complex. When police approached, the man reportedly attempted to flee but was apprehended after a brief foot chase.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered the weapon believed to have been used in the robbery — an assault-style rifle, along with several loaded magazines and items of clothing matching the description from the store’s security footage. The firearm has been sent for forensic testing to determine whether it was used in any other crimes.
The suspect has been charged with armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and use of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Authorities say additional charges may follow pending the outcome of the investigation.
“This was an extremely dangerous situation,” said Chief Wilson. “Bringing a military-style firearm into a public place endangers every innocent person nearby. We’re grateful for the quick response of our officers, which prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.”
Neighbors expressed shock after learning about the incident, describing the suspect as “quiet” and “kept to himself.” One resident commented, “You never really know what’s going on behind closed doors. It’s scary to think that someone living just a few houses away could be capable of something like this.”
The Troy Police Department confirmed that the suspect remains in custody without bail and will appear in court later this week. Authorities have also praised the store clerk for remaining calm under pressure, noting that his cooperation may have prevented further escalation.
As the community continues to process the incident, officials are reminding residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behavior immediately. The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine evening can turn into a life-threatening encounter when firearms are involved.
